ERCC DEVOTIONAL (TEKAN) DAILY SPIRITUAL DIET; WEDNESDAY 13TH DECEMBER, 2023.
TEXT: JOHN 13: 1 - 11.
SPIRITUAL FOCUS: JESUS HUMBLED HIMSELF.
A few days ago, we heard how Mary anointed Jesus' feet with perfumed oil instead of washing with water. According to Jewish tradition, the work of a slave included washing the feet of strangers.
The work is not honourable but demeaning. In today's reading. Jesus, who wanted to set a good example for His disciples, "arose and ate and drink." He poured water in the basin and began to wash the feet of His disciples... (vs. 4, 5).
This is a sign of humility. He did the work of a servant, a good example for us to follow. That is, to help our brothers without being selfish or arrogant. We always respect one another, making others superior to us (Philippians 2: 3 - 4).
Let us not take the attitude of Peter who wanted to stop Jesus from washing his feet. Because we are sinners, we need Jesus to cleanse us today and tomorrow. Fortunately, through the blood of Jesus Christ, His choice on the cross, cleansing from our sins when we confess them (1 John 1: 9).
But if we refuse them, we will not receive God's blessing (Proverbs 28: 13). While Jesus was washing the disciples, Judas Iscariot was with them, even though he knew what he had in mind. Jesus set a perfect example for us. That is, we should not refuse to do good to our enemies.
We should love them, feed them and give them water and by so doing, we are heaping coals of fire on them (Rom. 12: 20).
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Has Jesus already purified you?
PRAYER: Lord God, I hold on, help me to follow in the footsteps of Your Son Jesus Christ so that I may receive Your blessing, Amen.
