ERCC DEVOTIONAL (TEKAN) DAILY SPIRITUAL DIET WEDNESDAY 8TH NOVEMBER, 2023
TEXT: JOHN 6: 25-40
SPIRITUAL FOCUS: THE BREAD OF LIFE OF JESUS CHRIST.
In yesterday's study we heard how Jesus fed five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish. In today's reading, people are looking for Jesus. Knowing their hearts and their motives, he went out and said to them,
"You are really looking for me, not because you saw the miracles, but because you ate the bread and were satisfied" (verse 26). He warned them not to look for perishables, but things that will last. This warning affects us in this generation.
Often some followers of Christ have no desire for spiritual things but worldly things - position, materials, property and so on. This is incorrect. Ask yourself, what will you gain if you gain the whole world but lose your life? (Mark 8:36). The people ask Him what they should do to do the things that God wants them to do.
Jesus told them to believe in the one whom God sent. Dissatisfied with His speech, they asked Him to perform a miracle. Even today. There are many people who call themselves followers, but they still doubt it. They want Him to show or prove His authority, so that they can be sure that He is God's Son.
The people remembered Jesus for what their ancestors ate in the wilderness, the manna from heaven. He showed them that He was sent by God, He then showed them that He is the Bread of Life (v. 33). When they heard this, they asked Jesus to give them daily bread. This is what we need in order to live a satisfying life.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Jesus is the Eternal Life.
PRAYER: Lord God, I beseech you, increase my faith and encouragement for Christ Jesus, Amen.
John:6.25
When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"
John:6.26
Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
John:6.27
Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."
John:6.28
Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"
John:6.29
Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."
John:6.30
So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?
John:6.31
Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
John:6.32
Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
John:6.33
For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
John:6.34
"Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread."
John:6.35
Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.
John:6.36
But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.
John:6.37
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.
John:6.38
For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
John:6.39
And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.
John:6.40
For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."
